Amazingly the NY Stock exchange is buying wind offsets to cover their 28 million kilowatts they consume annually…. I never thought those traders on Wall street had a green heart ….

Not only have we received ISO 14001 certification at Express Data in Australia, we also got word yesterday that we have obtained 14001 and 18001 (Health and Safety) at Plessey in South Africa…. everyone involved in both businesses needs to take a massive bow on what is a truly incredible achievement in 8 months! CONGRATULATIONS to Simon and Ashley and their team from Plessey and to Kellie and her team at Express Data and of course to the amazing Ms Turner….

There is always the hideous expectation of the flight back from London to Sydney… 25 hours of hell as your carbon footprint heats up the atmosphere… but waiting for me on Saturday night was my friend’s birthday party… announcing to the 200 or so people that it marked the official launch of her environmental activism…. the house is right on beautiful Clovelly beach in Sydney and the night was still and clear as we all sauntered out towards the beach with a candle-lit lantern and a glass of vino …. I was a “3″ …. part of the 350 we spelled out… high on the cliff edge was the photographer and a person calling out our drills with a megaphone to get this motley sometime greenie group into their perfect lines… and on this ever-so perfect Saturday night 200 of us spelled out the numbers 350 by lantern light… it felt truly profound and special… to call out to world leaders to make sure they make a difference at Cophenhagen in December….

I had a meeting today with a group called Second Nature… their clients include a swag of big brands like Shell and Barclays…. they work on all manner of environmental sustainability projects and work with contracting experts in diverse fields…. the one partner, Charles, is involved with 1010 – the UK initiative aimed at reducing your carbon footprint by 10% by the end of 2010… The UK business is going to participate with the support of the country manager, Ton and the environmental thinktank here… Charles gave me a fun little light as a feather 1010 pendant … made from a recycled Boeing plane!!!!!!

Today was a big day… a day that everyone involved in our green journey can be proud of… it was the launch of the Carbon Disclosure Project for the FTSE 350 and we were placed in the Leadership Index… second year in a row… but this year we had to show what were doing to mitigate our risk and how we were taking advantage of opportunities provided by climate change… so I sat in the presentation this morning beaming with delight… the speakers were outstanding – the Secretary of State for the Environment in the UK and the Chairman of one of the world’s largest insurance companies, Aviva…. ultimately the messages were clearly – environmental sustainability needs to be embedded in the organisation, it needs to colour decision-making processes and regulation is going to hope and mandatory reporting is going to be the order of the day….

I Love Mondays

Yes I know it is Wednesday … but I do enjoy Green Mondays here in London… run by 2degrees, this monthly event manages to get a great selection of speakers and a massive turnout. This week I listened to the senior procurement person from one of the world’s largest beverage organisations talking about Risk… interesting they are making decisions right now about locations of their facilities in what he terms “non-water distressed locations”… the other interesting speaker was the MD of the largest privately owned engineering subcontracting firm in the UK – he made a cutting remark about architects …. that until we construct buildings from the inside out and not the other way around we will struggle to truly build GREEN buildings…. here is a scary fact… 50% of all GHG emissions in the UK come from buildings…

Lewis Pugh is his name… he is a hybrid South African/Brit… he is a long-distance swimmer… and he is trying to raise awareness around the environment… and when you watch his swim which he did in the north pole for one kilometre in a small pair of speedos… I suspect you will also be amazed… his aim to raise the plight of the melting arctic ice and what an environmental disaster that will be… today he is my new hero… check it out

I read yesterday about a new campaign here in the UK that was launched a little under a month ago… the intention is to get individuals and businesses to commit to reducing their GHG emissions by 10% by the end of 2010…. the list of names is not really a who’s who at the moment but mobile phone giant here, O2 has just signed up so I think that may change…. We’ll review the opportunity here for DDUK …. the campaign may be coming to a region near you as there is loads of interest in the US and Oz….
